Church Sinks

Church Sinks, taken from the bridge at
Ystradfellte, looking upstream.
Station 1.  Church Sinks (Ystradfellte)

Information:

The river Mellte sinks underground at Church sinks, which is directly opposite Ystradfellte Church. The sinks are located on the east bank of the river.
Google Earth co-ordinates:
51°48’29.11N 3°33’05.11”W
Elevation 256m. SN932133

The river flows underground for 900m in a straight line to Porth Yr Ogof cave and takes 2.25 hours to travel this distance, suggesting that the actual, as yet undiscovered water course is significantly longer.
Many attempts have been made to dig open Church Sinks but regular flooding has prevented all attempts from being successful.
Stand at the centre of the bridge at Ystradfellte and point
your camera upstream.

How to record data:

Photo: Stand on the bridge half way across
and point your camera directly upstream.

Temperature:
First, please make a note of the instrument you use for temperature readings.
A diver's D-Timer or computer is fine.
Tie the instrument to some string and weight it down.
Leave in the river water for 5 minutes and take a reading of the water temperature immediately on removal.

Conditions:
Make a note of whether the river is running under the bridge or not (i.e sinking at church sinks).
Make a note of any flora (plant life) or fauna (critters) you may see in the immediate vicinity of the station.
