Little Neath River Cave, Sump 1

Station 7
Little Neath River Cave - Sump 1

Sump 1 in Little Neath River Cave (LNRC) is home to trout and bullheads and is a short, easy cave dive.
It can be dived either from Little Neath or Bridge Cave (easier!).

Some strong smells of diesel or paraffin have been noted by cavers in LNRC and some strange white residue has also been noted.

Project Baseline took some water samples from various inlets down the LNRC passageway as far as Sump 1, with the support of the environment agency. There was no diesel/paraffin smell that day and the samples came back with no abnormalities detected.

We are very keen for visiting cavers and divers alike to fill out the data form for LNRC and mention when and where there is any sign or smell of pollution. This will help us to build up a picture of whether it is seasonal or purely random and perhaps help us to trace the source.
To take your standard photo, please point your camera (be careful of steam!) into the sump pool from the LNRC side. If you are diving, please take an underwater photograph, taking in as much information into the picture as possible.
We are considering a secci disc at this location to monitor visibility.
